Frequently Asked Questions

What is xLights and is it free?

xLights is free, open-source software used to design and control pixel light shows. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and it is the most widely used sequencing software in the hobby. Every Magical Light Shows DIY sequence is delivered as an xLights file ready to import.

Do I need to know xLights to run a Magical Light Shows display?

No. Our All-In-One kits come pre-programmed and require zero xLights knowledge — plug in, power up, and enjoy. xLights is only needed if you want to customize your show or build a fully DIY display using our sequences.

How do I import a Magical Light Shows sequence into xLights?

Open xLights, create a new sequence with your music file, then use the Import feature to map our sequence props to your own model layout. The featured tutorial at the top of this page walks through the full process step by step.

How do I add Magicolour Aura moving heads to my xLights setup?

Magicolour Aura moving heads are imported into xLights as a custom model. The "Importing Magicolour Aura Moving Heads" tutorial above walks through adding the fixture and mapping the channels. If you're using older sequences, you'll also need to apply the offset shown in the second tutorial so the heads track correctly with the rest of your show.

What hardware do I need to run a pixel light show?

At minimum: RGB pixels, a 5V or 12V power supply, a pixel controller, props or framing (J-channel, coro, or PVC), an FM transmitter for music broadcast, and a computer running xLights. Browse every component in our shop, or skip the build entirely with an All-In-One kit.

Where can I get help if my issue isn't covered here?

Call us at 888-RGB-SHOW (888-742-7469) or use our contact form. Every call goes to a real person who programs these shows for a living — no chatbots, no support tickets.
